BMW compatibility guide

How to check if your BMW can have CarPlay.

Before buying a retrofit or booking coding, make sure the model, iDrive system, screen and software route are checked properly.

Start here

The details that matter.

BMW CarPlay compatibility is not decided by the badge alone. Two cars with the same model name can have different iDrive hardware, software and factory options.

  • BMW model and year, for example F30 3 Series, F32 4 Series, F10 5 Series, G20 3 Series or G30 5 Series.
  • The iDrive or head unit generation, such as CIC, NBT, NBT EVO or later systems.
  • A clear photo of the current iDrive menu and screen layout.
  • The full VIN, shared privately, so installed options and possible routes can be checked.

Three-step check

A simple way to avoid buying the wrong part.

01

Identify the BMW

Start with model, year and body shape. The exact generation matters more than a broad label like 3 Series or 5 Series.

02

Check the iDrive

Photos of the main menu, media screen and controller are useful clues for identifying CIC, NBT, NBT EVO or another route.

03

Confirm the route

Only after the hardware and software clues are checked should you choose between activation, coding, retrofit kit or upgrade route.

What to ask before booking

Good retrofit questions protect the car.

Will factory controls still work?

Check whether steering wheel buttons, the iDrive controller, microphone and original BMW menu can still be used after the upgrade.

Is the route reversible?

For many retrofit routes, a reversible approach is preferred. Avoid unnecessary wire cutting or dashboard drilling where a cleaner route exists.

Is it wireless CarPlay?

Many routes can support wireless CarPlay, but the exact answer depends on your BMW's system and the retrofit option selected.
